@Parrot,
Unfortunately I can't because I have never used them and I honestly don't believe in using recruitment agencies. They do not have your best interests at heart when finding positions for you, because they get paid if and only if they find a body to fill a teaching position. This means they care more about making sure you take a job than helping you find the best job for you. If you search online you'll be able to quickly and easily find several agencies in Taiwan that will happily help you find a teaching job here. Good luck!

@Fi,
I have honestly never even thought of diving in Taiwan. If one wanted to go diving then my only suggestion would be the east coast of Taiwan, because it is still fairly untouched and not heavily polluted like the west coast where everyone lives. Want information on how to apply for public school jobs? Contact one of the many recruiters who have their grubby fingers on and control 90% of these jobs. I honestly can't help with public school jobs because the government primarily uses recruitment agencies to fill these positions. Just email them and they'll get back to you VERY fast. Sorry I can't provide much more information beyond this. Best of luck to you guys in coming to Taiwan.

Hi,
Myself and my boyfriend are qualified primary (elementary) school teachers from Ireland. We're looking to get away for the year (due to dire employment circumstances here!!) and would like some information.
1. Do you know any foreigners/have any contacts in public schools? We just need information on the job application process and requirements for teaching in the public ed system.
2. What's the diving like? (if any!) My boyfriend loves diving, and is keen to try out diving in a climate where you don't need to wear fourteen layers of rubber getting into the water : p

Your blog is great. Thank you for the information you have provided so far, great insight into Taiwan.

@gaz,

Thanks for the question. The answer to your question is at the top of this page. I have pasted it below for your easy reference.

You have a bachelor’s degree (or 2 year associate diploma with TEFL certification).

@Lono,
Hi, well without a teaching certificate you can't teach in a public school. However, you do have two MA degrees, which means you can "technically" teach in a university, but there's a problem. Most universities here now was PhD holders AND they strongly PREFER MA holders to have an MA in something related to teaching or English. You could get a job at a university, but it would definitely be part-time (six hours a week maximum) and they wouldn't be able to sponsor you for a work permit/visa. This means you'd have to find a "main" job that would give you enough hours and then you could apply for the university position. Now, hopefully you can see why 90% of the English teaching jobs in Taiwan are in cram schools, because there are heaps and they will hire anyone. My advice? Try China if you are just going for a holiday. Taiwan is possible but you have very few options besides cram schools. I hope that helps and good luck!

Hi
I am a 55-year old, 20-year veteran in education, but as an Administrator here in California, USA. I do not have a teaching credential, however I do have two Master's Degree's, one in Psychology and the other in Educational Administration. I have taught class many times over the years when one of my teachers had an emergency. Here in the US, an Administration degree trumps a Teaching Credential, but I don't know how they look at that in Asia. I am on hiatus over here for a couple of years and would love to come over to Taiwan, or possibly another part of Asia and learn about the cultures while working in the trenches as an English teacher. Not sure if my credentials are enough to allow me to get hired over there since things are so different between here and there? Would love some feedback. I've heard Taipei is wonderful, but have also heard that parts of China are also? Also, because you say the 'cram' schools really seek younger personnel, is my age going to be a hindrance also? Thanks a bunch, Lono

Thanks,

That is actually a better answer than I hoped for because I would be perfectly happy to teach 10 hours or so a week. I mostly just want the social interaction.
